Background of the Study
Digital literacy, the ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms, plays an increasingly important role in shaping communication practices. In Nigeria, where digital technology is rapidly transforming social interactions, online communication has become a critical area of study. This research examines how digital literacy influences pragmatic awareness—the capacity to use language appropriately in various contexts—in Nigerian online communication. Through a case study of online forums, chatrooms, and social media interactions, the study investigates how users navigate pragmatic challenges such as tone, politeness, and context adaptation. Increased digital literacy may enhance users’ ability to interpret and employ pragmatic cues, leading to more effective communication. Conversely, a lack of digital literacy could result in misunderstandings and reduced communicative efficiency (Olu, 2023). The study aims to document the relationship between digital literacy levels and pragmatic competence, providing insights into the role of education and technology in modern language use (Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing importance of digital literacy, there is limited research on its impact on pragmatic awareness in Nigerian online communication. Variations in digital literacy levels may lead to inconsistent use of pragmatic devices, resulting in miscommunication and ineffective online interactions (Olu, 2023). The absence of empirical data on how digital literacy influences pragmatic competence hampers efforts to develop targeted educational interventions and communication strategies (Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To assess digital literacy levels among Nigerian online communicators.
To analyze the relationship between digital literacy and pragmatic awareness.
To propose strategies for enhancing pragmatic competence through digital education.
Research Questions
How does digital literacy affect pragmatic language use online?
What pragmatic challenges are associated with low digital literacy?
What interventions can improve pragmatic awareness in digital communication?
Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the intersection of digital literacy and pragmatic competence in Nigerian online communication. Its findings will guide educators and policymakers in developing strategies to improve digital communication skills, thereby enhancing overall language effectiveness (Olu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to online communication in Nigeria and does not extend to offline pragmatic practices.
